Metacon's Greek Arm Wins EU Grant for Biogas Hydrogen Initiative in PUREHY2+

Metacon's Greek subsidiary wins EUR 188,018 EU grant for PUREHY2+, turning biogas into high-purity green hydrogen and capturing CO2 with ERDF-backed fundin

Grant Amount and Funding Structure

Metacon AB's wholly owned Greek subsidiary, Metacon SA, has been awarded European Union funding for its part in the PUREHY2+ project, a scheme intended to let biogas producers produce high-purity hydrogen on site while also capturing carbon dioxide. In an announcement dated October 9, 2026, the company stated that USD 210,610 of its project budget will be effectively covered by the EU grant, equal to 80% of Metacon's total project budget of USD 263,260.

The overall project carries a budget of USD 1,822,070 and will run for 36 months. Financing comes through the European Union's "Competitiveness" Programme (ESPA 2021-2027), with public expenditure co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and Greek National Funds.

Why Biogas Is the Feedstock of Choice

PUREHY2+ is built around an integrated system that produces hydrogen at a purity exceeding 99.97%, matching fuel cell-grade specifications, while carbon dioxide is separated for capture in the same process. Biogas is already generated from organic waste at thousands of locations throughout Europe, and converting it into high-purity green hydrogen would allow existing biogas plants to add a high-value product to their output, extending the use of locally available renewable energy beyond electricity and biomethane.

Christer Wikner, President and CEO of Metacon, commented on the opportunity: "Biogas plants already have access to valuable renewable feedstock and established production infrastructure. We see great potential in how these assets can also be used to produce high-purity green hydrogen and capture green carbon dioxide on site. For Metacon, the project is an opportunity to advance our technology towards a new enabling system solution for existing biogas producers and the wider hydrogen market."

Technical Scope and Project Partners

Operating under the code ΕΚΠΑΡ02-0081456, the PUREHY2+ consortium consists of Metacon, the research centres NCSR Demokritos and CERTH/CPERI, and the biogas producer BIOGAS LAGKADA. The partners will examine two distinct hydrogen production routes: reforming of biomethane and dark fermentation using cyanobacteria. To purify the resulting gas streams and capture carbon dioxide, the project will develop hybrid membrane and sorbent systems.

Progression from the PUREHY Precursor Project

The initiative is a continuation of the previously completed PUREHY project, in which the same consortium built and assessed Greece's first semi-pilot unit for producing and purifying hydrogen from biogas on site. That unit, installed at BIOGAS LAGKADA, is capable of generating 1 Nm³ of hydrogen per hour via biogas reforming, at a purity above 99%. PUREHY2+ now aims to advance this work towards a more integrated and adaptable solution for biogas producers.

Role for Metacon's Technology Portfolio

For Metacon, participation in the project supports the ongoing development of its proprietary reforming technology along with gas purification and system integration capabilities. The project also explores how the company's technology can be deployed within existing biogas infrastructure, opening a potential route to distributed renewable hydrogen production that does not depend solely on new electricity-intensive production capacity.

About Metacon AB

Metacon AB (publ) is a Swedish developer, manufacturer, and supplier of hydrogen production systems, offering design, installation, service and maintenance. Its shares are listed and traded on the Nasdaq First North Growth Market in Stockholm, Sweden.

The company's Electrolysis business unit designs and delivers complete electrolysis plants for large-scale hydrogen production, developed in close partnership with PERIC Hydrogen Technologies in Handan, China, a global leader in pressurized alkaline electrolysis technology.

The reforming business unit develops hydrogen generation solutions based on the company's proprietary patented HIWAR catalytic reactor technology, comprising advanced, high-efficiency reformers that produce hydrogen through catalytic steam reforming using biogas, biomethane or other renewable feedstocks such as bioethanol and green ammonia, with no need for grid connection.
